Anthony Parrington is Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Society of Australia’s NSW Committee and has maintained a two-decade interest in the emerging hydrogen sector after initially meeting the key representatives of Icelandic New Energy including (the late) Professor Thorsteinn I Sigfusson and Jón Björn Skúlason.   

Accordingly, in undertaking postgraduate research in Materials Science and Engineering at UNSW he has examined low-carbon building materials, hydrogen production pathways, hydrogen vehicle refuelling infrastructure, and hydrogen export, and the implications of emissions reduction legislation on emissions-intensive heavy industries [steel, cement, aluminium, etc].  

In recent times Anthony’s areas of interest have expanded to include the entire hydrogen colour spectrum as well as renewable ammonia, methanol, and toluene based hydrogen carriers, electrolysers, power-to-X, liquid hydrogen, and the emerging hydrogen in aviation and maritime sectors, as well as solid-oxide fuel cells for data centres, and some novel residential developments integrating renewable power-to-gas hydrogen production and/or residential hydrogen storage systems [i.e., ENE-FARM, and LAVO Hydrogen units].  

Moreover, through his past employment as a Hydrogen Fuel advisor based at the BlueScope Steel Port Kembla steelworks Anthony has advised on heavy-duty hydrogen powered prime movers, excavators, and front wheel loaders, as well as further documenting several international bio-hydrogen projects in Australia, Korea, Japan, and the USA, and the potential application of some emerging carbon-credit methodologies to some proposed renewable energy, waste-to-energy, agricultural, maritime, and transport projects in NSW.  

From an academic perspective, Anthony holds a Bachelor of Building Construction Management from the University of New South Wales and a Graduate Certificate in Carbon Management from Bond University and is awaiting the award of his MSc [research] degree in Materials Science and Engineering from UNSW that focused on low-carbon construction materials, hydrogen production, hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and hydrogen export.  

Through the HSA NSW Committee, Anthony is wishing to build further collaboration between all the key hydrogen stakeholder groups including the Australian Hydrogen Research Network [AHRN], Australian Hydrogen Council, Engineers Australia, iChemE, and the Hydrogen Transport Forum, and to facilitate further interactions between industry, government, and the hydrogen research community, as well as University students and early career professionals.
